Application Requirements of Chinese University

There a sets of requirements has been set by Chinese Government as well as Chinese Universities for foreign students to apply in Chinese Universities. There are some common requirement for applying in all Universities whereas University to University varies in some short of qualifications. Here I have discussed the qualifications in details.

  Citizenship: The applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen with a valid passport. Some University also set restriction upon some Nationalities (Most Often War affected Countries) for applying in those universities. Apart from This Chinese Universities has different policies from the students of Inner Mongolia, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

   Good physical and mental health: Applicants have to be free from infectious or contagious diseases and there have to be no physical or mental disorders that could interfere with study.

  Age Restriction: Applicants should be under 25 for Undergraduate applications. Only a few Universities accept up to 30years aged students for Undergraduate level.  Applicants for master’s program should be under 35 & for Doctoral applicants should be under 40 years.    Academic Requirements: Undergraduate and Diploma Applicants must hold a high school diploma (12th Grade). Applicants for master’s program must hold a bachelor’s degree, and for applicants for doctoral program must hold a master’s degree.

    Language Requirement: Applicants should have Chinese or English language proficiency that meets the requirement set by the University. Some Universities ask for English proficiency scores such as IELTS/TOEFL/Duo lingo/PTE. Whereas most of the Universities still accept MOI. For Chinese taught programs University requires HSK4/5 or offer 1 year preparatory Language course.

  Interview/AdmissionTest: Usually Chinese university arrange an online interview prior the admission confirmation. From the year 2024 some universities started taking online admission test as mandatory requirements for the International students.

  Non-Criminal Record: Applicants have to have a clear Police Record and provide a Non-criminal record certificate while submitting application. 

 

In addition University can set some extra requirements for admission as per their policy. Such as- 

  • Learning Ability: Applicants should have good learning ability and academic performance. The requirement for previous academic grade level can be also fixed by the University.
  • Supervisor Acceptance Letter: For applying Master and Doctoral Degree some university require Supervisor Acceptance Letter

Required Documents

  1. Passport Size Photo (White background is preferable )
  2. A scanned copy of the Passport Information Page. An applicant shall submit a clear scanned copy of the information page of his/her passport that will not expire on or before 12 March 1of the applying year. Renew the passport if the requirement is not met.
  3. Diploma and certificate of highest education (notarized photocopy). An applicant who is a current university student shall submit the certificate of expected graduation or student status issued by his/her university;
  4. Academic transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English shall be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English;
  5. Certificate of language proficiency. When applying for a Chinese-taught program, an applicant shall provide a valid HSK score report that meets the program’s language ability requirements. When applying for a program taught in a language other than Chinese, an applicant shall provide a certificate of proficiency in the language as required by the designated university.
  6. A study or research plan written in Chinese or in English (no less than 500 words/characters for undergraduates; no less than 800 words/characters for scholars; no less than 1000 words/characters for postgraduates);
  7. Recommendation letters. An applicant for a postgraduate program or for academic education as a senior scholar shall submit two recommendation letters in Chinese or in English from professors or associate professors;
  8. A Bank statement of financial sponsor having sufficient amount (at least USD$2000 balance)
  9. An applicant to study in China for more than six months shall submit a photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form(the original document, printed by Chinese quarantine authorities, shall be filled in in English and kept by the applicant). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Medical examination results are valid for only six months;
  10. An applicant shall submit a valid Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (or Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the local public security (such as the police station), usually issued within six months prior to the submission date of the application.
  11. A self-Introduction video of 2 to 5 minutes.
  12. An applicant under the age of 18 shall submit the legal documents of his/her legal guardian(s) in China;
  13. Research Papers (mostly essential for Doctoral Candidate- optional)
  14. Supervisor Acceptance Letter (Optional)
  15. Pre Admission Notice (For CSC Application)
  16. An applicant for the arts or design program shall provide his/her own works (such as videos and paintings)
